Covenant of Christian Community

COVENANT OF CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY of FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

1 Corinthians 12:12-13

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body…

1Corinthians 13: 13

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

THIS IS WHO WE ARE CALLED TO BE…

 Faithful

We believe that we should serve others, with humility, as if we are serving Christ himself. We endeavor to support all of the ministries of the church through our prayers, presence, gifts, and service.

We believe in coming together for worship and prayer, opening our hearts and minds to God’s message.

We believe that we are called as a congregation to reach out to our children and youth in order that they might know Christ.

We believe in encouraging spiritual development in others and ourselves.

We demonstrate this by participation in outreach ministries (WATTS, TOP, UMM), making our presence at worship, Sunday school, small groups, and other church activities a priority, participating in the sacraments of the faith (communion, baptism, confirmation), seeking opportunities to provide spiritual care in all we do, training and support of church leaders.

 Hopeful

We believe in reflecting hope through positive attitudes, actions, and giving one another our trust. We seek to build on the gifts and graces of others through encouragement.

We believe that through God’s guidance we can create a united vision and purpose-driven ministry.

We demonstrate this by showing gratitude to others, working through challenges with diligence and compromise, dealing directly with people and issues in a timely manner,  and periodically reflecting on the needs of church and community.

 Loving

We believe that we sincerely want what is God’s greatest good for each other, individually and collectively as a church.

We believe in embracing opportunities to meet one another wherever we are in our journeys and to care for and support one another.

We believe in listening to others and responding calmly with understanding in ways that show value for others’ ideas and opinions with thoughtfulness and sensitivity

We believe God calls us to show grace, mercy, and forgiveness to one another, at times sacrificing our own wants and desires, and recognizing that we are all imperfect.

We demonstrate this by giving hugs, visiting with one another in sickness or in times of need, providing and attending bereavement dinners, welcoming visitors, communicating with respect, acknowledging when we have hurt someone and asking forgiveness where it is needed.
